Field Service Technician

Lightning eMotors designs and manufacturers zero emission all-electric powertrains for commercial vehicles.

This position is for a Field Service Technician, responsible for providing a high level of on-site and remote support to Lightning eMotors customers and service providers. A qualified person in this position acts as a mobile field service technician to resolve technical (mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic) issues in a timely fashion in order to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. This position is multi-functional, serving as a technical resource to help customer and service provider technicians identify, troubleshoot, and resolve in-field issues along with a number of other responsibilities within the company

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a customer-facing technical member of the Customer Operations team.
  • Install, commission, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain existing and future fielded Lightning eMotors products (local and remote).
  • Interface and communicate with engineers, other staff, and customers to provide effective end-user support to resolve issues.
  • Serve as a professional representative of Lightning eMotors with timely and courteous responses to customer service calls.
  • Develop and maintain service information and history using the company’s service database and other software tools.
  • Consult with engineering teams to troubleshoot and resolve unusual in-field issues or problems.
  • Develop documentation, processes, and procedures related to Lightning eMotors’ best practices; develop thorough knowledge of these documents and processes and instruct others in their application.
  • Read and evaluate installation and service material (engineering drawings, schematics, diagrams, etc.), make appropriate updates and revisions as necessary.
  • Provide serviceability input during design reviews (prevent serviceability problems before they arise).
  • Advise staff regarding in-field product performance, customer satisfaction, and areas of potential product improvement.
  • Provide on-site training and periodic audits of Lightning eMotors authorized conversion and service providers.
  • Provide on-site training for Lightning eMotors customers (driver and technician training).
  • Assist with testing, repair, and production duties at HQ technical facility.

Required Proficiencies:

  • Certificate of Completion from accredited automotive technical school
  • Excellent Customer Service oriented skills and attitude
  • Comprehensive knowledge of shop and automotive tools
  • Excellent mechanical and electrical aptitude
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, ability to effectively communicate in-person, over the phone, and in written formats

About the position:

This position for a Maintenance Technician will report to the Building and Facilities Manager and is responsible for preforming general maintenance, repairs and improvements of office, production, and other areas of the facility.  Ensures the facility remains in operating form by repairing any problems when they are discovered before they have a chance to worsen.  Daily tasks will vary day-to-day based on what needs attention at the time, but can frequently include maintenance and light repairs, aesthetic work, responding to employees’ maintenance requests, occasional janitorial tasks, light installation and carpentry work, repairing of equipment/appliances. A maintenance schedule may be implemented so time management skills are required.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Assists with general building maintenance, basic repair, remodeling, and operation to include but not limited to: lighting, wiring, minor plumbing, HVAC and electrical.
  • Perform light janitorial duties including trash removal, sweeping, mopping as needed and directed.
  • Regularly check community spaces to identify issues with litter, mechanical failures, breakdowns, leaks, and other facility-related issues.
  • Conduct performance assessments on company appliances, equipment and identify and report the need for major repairs.
  • Order, inventory, and stock necessary building supplies.
  • Assists with maintenance and repair of company furniture, fixtures, and equipment
  • Inspect and diagnose problems and figure out the best way to correct them.  Assist tradespeople with electrical, plumbing, or HVAC repairs.
  • Perform related duties as required.

About the position: Reporting to the Production Manager, the Assembly Operator position is responsible for assembly of components to form a kit in support of Lightning eMotors installation service providers. A qualified person in this position will be the front-line operator on the assembly floor, hands on components utilizing tools to complete kits to specification. This position is multi-functional, serving as a general resource to help production floor operations and other duties as necessary.

Assembler Job Responsibilities:

  • Produces kitted components by assembling parts and subassemblies
  • Read, interpret, and follow basic blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and other written instructions or procedures to accurately assemble equipment and products
  • Utilize handheld tools such as a handheld screw, drill gun, driver
  • Performing wiring and hose connections as required by OEM standards
  • Maintain inventory of product in workstations
  • Perform quality work checks to ensure the product meets quality standards
  • Identify product defects and complete appropriate documentation when defects are identified
  • Rework and/or repair assembled equipment and products according to engineering specification changes
  • Perform all work in accordance with quality standards and established safety procedures
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Documents actions by completing production and quality forms.

Skills/Experience/Knowledge required:

Mandatory:

  • 1-2 years mechanical assembly experience may be required

About the position: Wire Harness Technician is responsible for the creation of wire harness boards taken from harness drawings; interpreting engineering drawings and schematics to create custom wire harnesses; determining wire sizing and connection type based on applications and current limits;  able to solder and crimp harness components when necessary.  A qualified person in this position will be able to perform intricate detailed work with the ability to read and interpret written instructions and diagrams from the Engineering Department.   This is a hands-on position that involves manual dexterity to wrap small wires together to create wire harnesses. The purpose of the position is to assist in the install of a kit being as smooth as possible reducing the amount of time Engineering must intervene. This process also follows into a vehicle as well to ensure that a complete vehicle is ready for final delivery to customer and is driving up to Lightning Systems specifications. This position is also multi-functional, serving as a general resource to help wire harness development/production when needed or if no vehicles are ready for up-fit.

 Responsibilities:

  • Routes and ties wires to form wire harness used in electrical and electronic equipment or systems. Reads instructions, such as work orders, diagrams, and wire lists to determine materials needed and sequence of assembly.
  • Selects wires of specified color, marking, or length, and loops wires between guide pegs on harness board, following color-coded lines or sequential numbers on board or diagram.
  • Wraps and ties wires together at designated points to form harness, manually or using tie-wrap gun.
  • May apply sealing liquid to secure knots in ties, using brush.
  • Attach ends of wires to components, plugs, or terminal strip, using soldering iron or crimping device when necessary
  • May insert cable in plastic tubing or inject plastic sealant around terminals to protect cable from dust and moisture.
  • May test wiring continuity, using continuity tester.
  • May mark identifying data on completed harness.
  • Create harness boards (nail boards) from harness drawings
  • Fabricate custom wire harnesses from engineering drawings and schematics
  • Spec wire size and connector type based on application and current limits
  • Install, test, and troubleshoot vehicle wiring harness systems
  • Provide design input and implementation feedback to Engineering

About the position: Reporting to the Area Lead, the Vehicle Assembly Operator is responsible for all removal of OEM components, upfit of all in house assembled components, and assembly of the powertrain kit prior to installation in the vehicle.  This is a hands-on position involving mechanical modification and assembly, and utilizing all types of hand tools and diagnostic skills to ensure that the kit is complete to build specifications. The purpose of the position is to assist in the install of a kit being as smooth as possible reducing the amount of time Engineering must intervene as well to ensure that a complete vehicle is ready for final delivery to customer and is driving up to Lightning Systems specifications. This position is also multi-functional, serving as a general resource to help wire harness development/production when needed or if no vehicles are ready for up-fit.

 Key accountabilities include:

  • Inspect and verify kitted components attached to sled to ensure all harnesses and components are functional by helping to find errors before installation, making rework easier to accomplish if needed.  Apply similar inspection to finished vehicles testing all operations before delivery to customer.
  • Read, interpret, and follow basic blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and other written instructions or procedures to accurately inspect, assemble, and troubleshoot equipment and products.
  • Utilize handheld tools such as a handheld screw, drill gun, driver
  • Perform wiring and hose connections as required by EOM stands
  • Troubleshoot difficult problems in wiring harness design/manufacturing
  • Perform quality work checks to ensure the product meets quality standards
  • Identify product defects and complete appropriate documentation when defects are identified
  • Rework and/or repair assembled equipment and products according to engineering specification changes
  • Perform all work in accordance with quality standards and established safety procedures
