Field Service Technician

Lightning eMotors designs and manufacturers zero emission all-electric powertrains for commercial vehicles.

This position is for a Field Service Technician, responsible for providing a high level of on-site and remote support to Lightning eMotors customers and service providers. A qualified person in this position acts as a mobile field service technician to resolve technical (mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic) issues in a timely fashion in order to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. This position is multi-functional, serving as a technical resource to help customer and service provider technicians identify, troubleshoot, and resolve in-field issues along with a number of other responsibilities within the company

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a customer-facing technical member of the Customer Operations team.
  • Install, commission, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain existing and future fielded Lightning eMotors products (local and remote).
  • Interface and communicate with engineers, other staff, and customers to provide effective end-user support to resolve issues.
  • Serve as a professional representative of Lightning eMotors with timely and courteous responses to customer service calls.
  • Develop and maintain service information and history using the company’s service database and other software tools.
  • Consult with engineering teams to troubleshoot and resolve unusual in-field issues or problems.
  • Develop documentation, processes, and procedures related to Lightning eMotors’ best practices; develop thorough knowledge of these documents and processes and instruct others in their application.
  • Read and evaluate installation and service material (engineering drawings, schematics, diagrams, etc.), make appropriate updates and revisions as necessary.
  • Provide serviceability input during design reviews (prevent serviceability problems before they arise).
  • Advise staff regarding in-field product performance, customer satisfaction, and areas of potential product improvement.
  • Provide on-site training and periodic audits of Lightning eMotors authorized conversion and service providers.
  • Provide on-site training for Lightning eMotors customers (driver and technician training).
  • Assist with testing, repair, and production duties at HQ technical facility.

Required Proficiencies:

  • Certificate of Completion from accredited automotive technical school
  • Excellent Customer Service oriented skills and attitude
  • Comprehensive knowledge of shop and automotive tools
  • Excellent mechanical and electrical aptitude
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, ability to effectively communicate in-person, over the phone, and in written formats
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and independent worker; ability to work alone or as part of a team (both LS and non-LS personnel)
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Ability to read drawings, prints, schematics, and diagrams
  • Strong troubleshooting ability and outside of the box thinking
  • Must be proficient with computers (MS Office suite, basic networking, service tracking software)
  • Ability to travel (may exceed 25% of time, travel can be irregular and immediate)
  • Extended work shifts, may exceed 12 hours at times
  • Excellent problem solving and creative thinking
  • Highly organized and documented
  • Proven service experience / history

Desired Proficiencies:

  • Electric vehicle maintenance and repair experience
  • Medium and Heavy Duty truck experience
  • Automotive diagnostics (CAN, OBDII) and repair experience
  • Vehicle programming experience (tuning and optimization with software)
  • Automotive wiring experience
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Salary Range: Depends on Experience

About the position:

Lightning eMotors designs and manufacturers zero emission all-electric powertrains for commercial vehicles.

This position is for a Material Handler, responsible for organizing and coordinating materials to the assembly employees. This position reports to the Inventory Controller.  A qualified person in this position will help support the delivery of materials needed in assembly, wiring, and conversion areas of Lightning Systems as well as help maintain and organize the current inventory. This position is multi-functional, serving as a general resource to help production floor operations and other duties as necessary.

 Material Handler Responsibilities:

  • Organize, sort, deliver necessary components and parts to various departments in order to complete desired tasks
  • Check incoming deliveries to make sure all ordered material meets quality standards
  • Load and unload packages
  • Organize stock in the most efficient way using forklifts, pallets, cranes etc.
  • Receive and check incoming material
  • Pull material to fulfil orders properly
  • Package orders and place them on trucks for delivery
  • Monitor inventory levels and suggest new orders when needed
  • Document orders, materials and any stock movements
  • Read, interpret and follow basic build of material (BOMS)
  • Maintain inventory of product in workstations, Kanban
  • Perform all work in accordance with quality standards and established safety procedures
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualification requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1-2 years materials inventory experience preferred
  • Basic reading skills. Must be able to follow directions
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  • Forklift experience desired
  • Ability to use thinking and reasoning to solve a problem
  • High attention to detail and self-motivation skills
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude
  • Ability to utilize inventory computer programs
  • Great organization skills
  • Ability to read drawings, prints, schematics, and diagrams

 Physical demands and abilities

  • Ability to lift 30-50 pounds
  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks
  • Regularly possess manual dexterity to put parts or pieces together quickly and accurately
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Must be able to bend/stoop, squat/crouch, climb, kneel and twist.

Development & Test Engineer

About the position:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Engineering Development and Test, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Given high-level objectives conceptualize, design, and test new systems and products
  • Investigate new technologies and components for application in Lightning Systems products
  • Create DVP&R’s for new systems and designs
  • Commission and troubleshoot new products, both in the lab and in the field
  • Refine complex data sets into usable information and reports
  • Create system-level designs of various mechatronics systems related to commercial EV’s

Skills/Experience/Knowledge required:

Mandatory:

  • 2+ years relevant engineering experience
  • Testing experience using LabVIEW
  • Hands on skills to build and operate vehicle/laboratory test systems
  • Understand how to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics
  • Experience with writing component and system specifications to meet high level objectives
  • Bachelors (ABET) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar engineering degree

Desired experience in the following:

  • Electric, fuel cell, and hybrid vehicle theory
  • Analysis, data logging, and diagnostics of CAN and OBD systems
  • Experience with writing control logic in Simulink, Raptor, and/or Motohawk
  • Experience with 3D CAD software, preferably Creo
